If it pains you to hear about my weekend this far into the week, just think of it as me bringing a little weekend joy into your midweek slump. I just couldn’t go without telling you about my mother-daughter day!
Normally on Saturday mornings, my Mom and I work together. She gets up early and heads to the office, no doubt wondering for hours what time I’ll actually make it there. I drag my butt out of bed eventually, roll in, greet her, tell her what’s new, then put my head down and get to work.
This past Saturday though… sweet, glorious sleep! She had something in the morning so I got to sleep in and neither of us had to work! We had a full day of activities planned so it was good we got our rest.
By full day of activities, I obviously mean shopping! I’m not much of a shopper (understatement!) but my Mom is the only person on the planet who can tolerate me when shopping so she has the great (mis)fortune of being my shopping buddy.
I always know exactly what I want. I can scan a store and instantly know if there’s something I’m interested in. I’m not a browsing kind of shopper. Imagine my surprise when I get into the fitting room and discover that all of my items have stripes. ha! I was channeling Nicole I guess!
I only got two of the items seen but you know I just HAD to have the giraffe! My Mom put word in with the store employees that we request an elephant in the future.
When the next store’s selections ended up being all stripes too, I took another photo. Apparently I’m into stripes these days?
I only got one of these but I was heavily considering the first tshirt as well. My Mom said no and she’s probably right but I was still digging it. I do love me some bright colors!
After a lot of surprisingly successful shopping (which never happens), we grabbed dinner and I followed it up with a cupcake. How the heck do you choose just one flavor when there are this many options???
I knew they had cookie dough because I had seen it earlier in the day but they were out by the time I went to buy one. Heartbreaking. Don’t they know who I am?!? So I went with the option that ties for first place in my book: anything with sprinkles.
God bless whoever invented sprinkes. When I get married, please throw sprinkles. When you attend my baby shower, please gift me gender-appropriate colored sprinkles. When I die, please throw some sprinkles into the fire as I’m being cremated. And pray that I come back to live a second life as a non-edible immortal sprinkle. Or something like that. Maybe I should set my sights higher… CEO of a sprinkles company? Was this a drinking game to see how many times I can say sprinkles? Let’s move on.
After the sprinklefest came to an end, my Mom and I headed off to the theater. That’s right, friends. We’re fancy like that. Just kidding… I was wearing sneakers and shorts. And I ended up being one of only a handful of people under the age of 50. I don’t mind.
We saw a local production of a medley of Broadway tunes. There was mostly singing and dancing but a bit of acting between songs as well. It was a very small cast but they were all incredibly talented. This show was our substitute for taking the train into New York City and paying for real Broadway tickets. It’s totally not the same but shopping, cupcakes, way less travel, muuuch less expense, and getting to see/hear tunes from multiple shows made this option much more appealing than NYC.
Poorly lit in-theater photo of us in 3… 2… 1…
This was pretty much the best day ever. I’m sitting here thinking what the “except if…” would be and I can’t even come up with one thing. Wellll I guess finding a pile of unclaimed cash wouldn’t hurt but truly, I can’t think of anything that would’ve improved upon a full day spent with my Mom. She’s my best friend and the coolest lady ever. She has orders to live as long as I do so I never have to spend one second without her.
What’s your favorite activity for a parent-child day? What flavor cupcake would you have gotten? aaaand favorite Broadway musical? If ever we do end up going to NYC for a show, I must know your suggestions!
