13 in 2013 – September Checkup
September is winding down and I’m enjoying the last few hours of my birthday month. Let’s reflect on how September went for my 13 in 2013 goals, shall we?
My progress has slowed significantly lately. Aside from being two months behind on Project Life, I’ve continued all of my other monthly goals (like writing in our ilike books, blogging, etc). This month I made a bit of progress on my goal to read five non-fiction books by completing Love Does. I also read a decent portion of Steve Jobs but had to return it to the library before I finished it. No worries… I’ve already requested it again!
My biggest progress this month was something I completely stumbled into: volunteering for my soccer league. My goal for the year was to take advantage of four volunteer opportunities. I’ve been working on those (monthly More Love Letters notes, Great Strides, marathon volunteer, and 5k volunteer) but secretly hoped to find something that was ongoing (not one-time) but didn’t feel like I was forcing myself.
In the Spring I sent an email to the woman who runs a soccer league I play in, asking if she needed any help running the league. She was pretty much like “omgyesssssimmediately” so we met and ran down a list of ideas I had. Fast forward a few months to August and September, right before the season began, and we were in a mad dash to promote the league, get enough players, and get shirts made for everyone.
I created and now run our league’s facebook page, I recruited several new players to keep the league in tact, I regularly communicate with interested players, I helped design our league’s promotional tshirt, and I’m working on a marketing plan for late Winter/early Spring to hopefully add one or two entirely new teams to the league.
I had no idea that a quick email offer for help would turn into this, and I had no idea I would end up getting so involved. But this is a soccer league that I love and want to see it thrive. Putting so many hours into something I believe in and love is time well spent. I may not be able to devote as much time now to reading or building up my own business (yes, that’s a dream of mine!) but at least I can see that I’ve put my time into something valuable not only for me but for 80+ other soccer players in my town.
So maybe I didn’t make a ton of progress on my 13 in 2013 goals in September but damnit, what I did accomplish was pretty darn important.
I’m feeling that October might be my catch-up month. It’s also Spoil John month because it’s his birthday month! I’m hoping to get in a 5k or two (a goal on my list), put a dent into the Steve Jobs book, and catch up on Project Life.
How’d you do in September? What are you planning to tackle in October?
